L-Theanine and Cortisol: Does the Trending Supplement Actually Lower Stress Hormones?

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves, and it has become a fixture in stress-relief supplements, calming drink mixes, and "cortisol support" stacks sold online. The pitch is simple: a compound naturally present in green and black tea, taken in concentrated form, can take the edge off stress and lower cortisol without the sedation of other calming compounds. The research on L-theanine's calming effects is genuinely encouraging. The research specifically on cortisol is more mixed than most marketing suggests.
The most frequently cited positive result comes from a 2016 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial published in Nutrients, led by researcher David White, which tested a nutrient beverage in 34 healthy adults aged 18 to 40. Compared with placebo, the active drink reduced subjective stress one hour after a cognitive stress task and reduced the salivary cortisol response three hours after dosing. It is worth noting precisely what was tested: the beverage combined 200 milligrams of L-theanine with smaller doses of phosphatidylserine, alpha-GPC, and chamomile extract, not L-theanine alone, which makes it harder to credit the cortisol effect to L-theanine specifically rather than the combination.
A separate 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in Nutrients, led by researcher Shinsuke Hidese, took a different approach: 30 adults with a mean age of about 48 took 200 milligrams of isolated L-theanine daily for four weeks. That study found meaningful improvements in self-rated depression, trait anxiety, and sleep quality scores, along with better verbal fluency and executive function on cognitive testing. Notably, this trial, which used pure L-theanine rather than a multi-ingredient blend, did not report a significant change in cortisol or salivary immunoglobulin A levels. The psychological and cognitive benefits showed up; the cortisol measurement did not move.
Taken together, these two trials illustrate a pattern common across cortisol-focused supplement research: subjective stress, anxiety, and sleep measures tend to respond more consistently than cortisol itself, a hormone that fluctuates throughout the day and is genuinely difficult to move in a single controlled study. The 2016 result showing a cortisol change came from a combination product tested against an acute lab stressor; the cleaner single-ingredient, longer-duration trial did not replicate a cortisol effect, even while confirming real benefits for mood and anxiety symptoms.
What this means for anyone considering L-theanine: the case for it easing subjective stress, anxiety symptoms, and sleep quality is reasonably supported by controlled human trials, including at doses similar to what over-the-counter supplements provide. The case for it reliably lowering cortisol specifically, the claim most often used to sell "cortisol-support" products built around it, rests on thinner and more mixed evidence, with the strongest single positive result coming from a formula that combined L-theanine with several other ingredients rather than isolating its effect.
The honest summary is that L-theanine looks like a reasonably well-supported calming compound with a good safety profile, not a proven cortisol-lowering agent in isolation. Marketing that specifically promises lower cortisol from an L-theanine supplement is extrapolating from combination-product data and subjective stress outcomes rather than citing a clean, replicated cortisol result for the ingredient on its own.
