Collagen Supplements and Stress-Related Skin Aging: What a 2025 Meta-Analysis Actually Found

Collagen supplements are one of the best-selling categories in wellness, and stress is increasingly part of the sales pitch: powders and gummies marketed as a way to replace the collagen that chronically elevated cortisol supposedly breaks down. The physiology behind the cortisol part of that claim is real. Whether the supplement part of it holds up is a separate question, and a large 2025 meta-analysis suggests the honest answer is "it depends on who funded the study."

Start with what's actually established. Glucocorticoids, the hormone class that includes cortisol, are well documented to suppress collagen production in skin. Research published in Biomolecules in 2023 identified specific glucocorticoid receptor target genes that inhibit collagen synthesis in human dermal fibroblasts, and the skin-thinning effect of excess glucocorticoids is clinically familiar from long-term topical steroid use, where dermal atrophy is a recognized side effect. So the idea that sustained high cortisol can work against skin collagen is grounded in real cellular biology, not just a marketing narrative.

The supplement side is where the evidence gets messier. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrients in 2023, covering 26 randomized controlled trials and more than 1,700 participants, reported that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. Taken alone, that sounds like a fairly settled, favorable result.

A more recent and more rigorous look complicates it substantially. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis by Myung and Park in The American Journal of Medicine, examining 23 randomized controlled trials, split the evidence by funding source and study quality rather than pooling everything together. The pattern that emerged: industry-funded trials consistently reported significant benefits for hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles, while independently funded trials found no significant effect in any of those categories. When the analysis was restricted to only the highest-quality studies, the benefit disappeared entirely. The authors concluded there is currently no clinical evidence to support using collagen supplements to prevent or treat skin aging, a notably stronger statement than most coverage of collagen products acknowledges.

It's worth being precise about what this does and doesn't settle. It doesn't prove collagen supplements do nothing for anyone, and the industry has pushed back on how trials were classified as funded versus independent in that analysis. What it does show is that the confident, "clinically proven" framing common in collagen marketing is built on an evidence base that looks considerably weaker once funding bias and study quality are accounted for, and that's a different claim than dermal cortisol biology, which rests on more consistent mechanistic research.

That distinction is the practical takeaway. Chronically elevated cortisol suppressing skin collagen is a reasonably well-supported piece of physiology. A collagen supplement reliably replacing what stress takes away is not currently something the best available evidence backs up. If a collagen product fits comfortably into a routine and someone likes how their skin feels while using it, there's little harm in that, but it shouldn't be mistaken for a proven countermeasure to stress-related skin aging, and the sunscreen, sleep, and stress-management basics remain the interventions with the most consistent support.
