Essential Oils and Cortisol: Does Aromatherapy Actually Lower Stress Hormones?

Walk through the wellness aisle of almost any store and you will find diffusers, roll-on blends, and candles marketed with some version of the same promise: breathe this in and lower your cortisol. It is a specific, testable physiological claim dressed up as a lifestyle product, and the actual research behind it is more mixed and more modest than the marketing suggests.
The claim is not biologically far-fetched. Odor signals detected by the olfactory system have a direct anatomical connection to the limbic system, including the amygdala and hypothalamus, the same brain structures that help regulate the HPA axis and, downstream, cortisol release. That gives aromatherapy a real, if indirect, route to influence stress hormone signaling, unlike some wellness claims that have no plausible mechanism behind them at all.
Some controlled studies back this up in a narrow sense. A 2015 trial in Research in Complementary Medicine found that fifteen minutes of inhaled bergamot essential oil significantly lowered salivary cortisol in a group of 41 healthy women compared with a water control. A separate double-blind randomized trial found that intranasal lavender and fennel reduced salivary cortisol and improved sleep quality. Most notably, a 2026 study in the journal Stress, led by researchers at Northumbria University, ran a two-week inhalation protocol in adults with self-reported stress and found it normalized a blunted cortisol awakening response, a subtler and more clinically meaningful marker than a single cortisol reading, back toward the level seen in a no-intervention control group.
The caveats matter just as much as the positive findings. A 2023 systematic review in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice looked at 76 studies covering more than 6,500 patients and found that only 42% even measured a physiological marker like cortisol rather than relying on questionnaires alone, and that study quality across the field was frequently low, with substantial inconsistency between results. Separately, at least one workplace study of nurses found aromatherapy had little to no measurable effect on stress physiology during genuinely high-workload shifts, suggesting any effect may be easily overwhelmed by real-world stress load. That kind of split result is common across the aromatherapy literature: promising numbers in tightly controlled lab settings, weaker or inconsistent ones once real-world stressors are added back in.
This is the split worth remembering. A handful of small, well-controlled trials do show short-term, measurable drops in cortisol, or improvement in cortisol rhythm, from specific oils, doses, and inhalation protocols. What is not established is the broader marketing claim that any diffuser blend or "destress" candle reliably lowers cortisol in daily life. The strongest studies use standardized extracts, controlled exposure times, and specific compounds like bergamot or lavender, not whatever happens to be in a scented product picked off a shelf.
None of this means aromatherapy is worthless. A pleasant scent paired with a few minutes of intentional pause is a reasonable, low-risk addition to a stress-management routine, and it may modestly help on its own terms. It just is not, on the current evidence, a validated substitute for the basics that show more consistent effects on cortisol: adequate sleep, regular exercise, and addressing the actual source of chronic stress.
