Binaural Beats and Cortisol: What the Trending Audio Actually Does

Binaural beats playlists, often labeled with claims like "8Hz cortisol reset" or "instant stress relief frequency," have become a fixture on Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok. The pitch is that listening to a specific tone through headphones can directly retune your nervous system and lower stress hormones in minutes. The underlying audio effect is real and measurable; the specific hormonal claims attached to individual frequencies are where the evidence gets much thinner.
A binaural beat is created when two tones of slightly different frequency are played separately into each ear, typically through headphones. Rather than hearing two distinct pitches, the brain perceives a third, phantom "beat" equal to the difference between them, for example a 210Hz tone in one ear and a 200Hz tone in the other produces a perceived 10Hz beat. The theory behind most of the marketing, often called brainwave entrainment, holds that listening to a beat near a target frequency, such as the slower ranges associated with relaxed alpha or theta brain activity, can nudge overall brain activity toward that state.
Some of that theory has real support. A 2025 exploratory study in Physiological Reports found that a 6Hz binaural beat produced measurable shifts in electroencephalographic and autonomic nervous system activity in healthy adults compared with a control tone, which is a genuine physiological effect rather than a purely subjective one. On the hormonal side specifically, a 2022 randomized pilot study published in Scientific Reports had participants with elevated stress listen to either binaural beats or ASMR audio daily for three weeks; both groups showed significant improvements in perceived stress, anxiety, and sleep quality scores. Notably, the two very different types of audio produced similarly sized benefits, which suggests the relaxation response itself, not something unique to binaural frequencies, may be doing much of the work.
Zooming out, a 2024 systematic review of randomized controlled trials in Advances in Mental Health examined binaural beats specifically as a personal, non-clinical stress-management tool and concluded that the certainty of evidence remains low to moderate. Related reviews of binaural beats for sleep and pain outcomes have reported similarly mixed quality, with a majority of the trials assessed carrying a meaningful risk of bias. None of this means the studies found no effect, several report real reductions in self-reported stress and, in smaller studies, in salivary cortisol or alpha-amylase after listening. It does mean the evidence base is still small, inconsistent, and not yet strong enough to support precise claims about specific frequencies doing something ordinary calming audio cannot.
That gap is where most of the marketing overreaches. Bold claims that one particular Hz value is scientifically tuned to "detox cortisol" describe a level of precision the current research does not actually demonstrate; the honest summary is closer to "quiet, structured listening time is broadly relaxing," with binaural beats as one plausible format among several, rather than a uniquely potent hormonal switch.
None of this makes binaural beats a bad choice for a wind-down routine. They appear to be a low-risk, low-cost relaxation practice broadly comparable to calming music or guided breathing audio, and some people may simply prefer the format. The distinction worth holding onto is between "this is a reasonable way to relax" and "this specific frequency is a proven cortisol-lowering tool," since only the first claim is well supported by the research so far.
