The "Cortisol Cocktail" Trend: Does the Viral Drink Actually Lower Stress Hormones?

Scroll through wellness TikTok or Instagram long enough and you will eventually run into the "cortisol cocktail": a glass of orange juice, coconut water, a pinch of sea salt, and sometimes cream of tartar or a scoop of magnesium powder, stirred together and framed as a way to "support your adrenals" and bring down elevated cortisol. The trend, which took off around 2022 and 2023 and has kept resurfacing since, is often marketed alongside claims about reduced bloating, more stable energy, and even weight loss around the midsection. It is a genuinely appealing pitch: a kitchen-counter fix for a hormone most people only encounter through stress-related marketing. The actual evidence for the drink itself is much thinner than the claims suggest.
The reasoning behind the recipe borrows real physiology and stretches it. Sodium, potassium, and vitamin C are all genuinely involved in adrenal gland function, the adrenal glands need these nutrients to operate, and severe deficiencies can affect hormone production. But that is a different claim from saying that drinking orange juice and salted coconut water measurably lowers cortisol in someone with an already-functioning endocrine system. Cortisol release is governed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a feedback loop between the brain and adrenal glands that responds to a wide range of physical and psychological inputs, not by the momentary availability of any single nutrient from a drink consumed once in the morning.
Asked directly about the trend, a Cleveland Clinic dietitian put it bluntly: there is no science backing the claim that this specific drink combination lowers cortisol. Reporting from CBS News that surveyed multiple endocrinologists and dietitians found a similar consensus: no published clinical trial has tested the "cortisol cocktail" recipe itself against a placebo and measured cortisol before and after. What exists instead is a scientific rationale about the individual ingredients, layered onto a drink that has never actually been studied as a whole.
Some of the individual pieces have more support than others. A frequently cited 2002 randomized controlled trial published in Psychopharmacology gave healthy adults 3 grams of vitamin C daily, split into three 1,000-milligram doses, for two weeks before a public-speaking stress test, and found faster cortisol and blood pressure recovery afterward compared with placebo. That is a real, if dated and modestly sized, finding. It is also a dose roughly 15 to 20 times higher than the vitamin C in a single serving of orange juice. Extrapolating a laboratory result from isolated, high-dose supplementation to a splash of juice in a morning mocktail is exactly the kind of leap that separates a legitimate research finding from a marketing claim built on top of it.
There is little downside for most healthy people in drinking this occasionally, aside from the added sugar from juice and, for anyone managing blood pressure or on a sodium-restricted diet, the added salt, which can add up if the drink becomes a daily habit rather than an occasional one. It is worth noting that actual adrenal insufficiency, where the body cannot produce enough cortisol, is a diagnosed medical condition requiring physician-supervised treatment, not something a wellness drink addresses.
The realistic way to think about the cortisol cocktail is as an electrolyte-and-vitamin-C snack that some people enjoy, not a hormone-altering intervention. If the goal is genuinely lowering cortisol, the research more consistently points toward sleep, exercise, and chronic stress reduction than toward any single beverage, however photogenic it looks in a glass.
