Jet Lag and Cortisol: What Crossing Time Zones Actually Does to Your Stress Hormones

Anyone who has flown across five or six time zones knows the specific misery of jet lag: a bone-deep fatigue that a nap does not fix, waking up wide awake at 3 a.m., feeling foggy at what should be an ordinary hour. It is tempting to write this off as simply "being tired," but jet lag has a distinct hormonal signature, and cortisol, the body's main circadian-timing hormone as well as its best-known stress hormone, sits at the center of it.
In a well-functioning system, cortisol follows a predictable daily curve: it rises sharply around waking, then declines gradually through the day toward a low point near midnight. That rhythm is coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a small region of the brain often called the body's master clock, which is synchronized primarily by light exposure. Long-haul travel across time zones puts that master clock and the environment's actual light-dark cycle abruptly out of sync, and cortisol's rhythm is one of the more measurable casualties.
A 2021 study in the journal Endocrine measured salivary cortisol in a group of travelers before and after long eastward flights. It found that intercontinental travel meaningfully disrupted the normal cortisol pattern, including elevated late-night cortisol that is normally close to undetectable. For travelers who crossed more than five time zones, the cortisol rhythm after returning east "remained behind," still synchronized to the western time zone they had just left, rather than resetting to local time.
What the same study did not find is arguably just as important: there was no statistically significant correlation between the degree of cortisol rhythm disruption and how severe participants' jet lag symptoms actually were. In other words, cortisol desynchronization is a real, documented consequence of crossing time zones, but it is not a clean stand-in for how someone will feel, and it is not the sole mechanism behind jet lag. Sleep-wake timing, melatonin secretion, and core body temperature rhythms are shifting on their own, only partly overlapping schedules at the same time.
This distinction matters for separating what is proven from what is marketed. Sleep Foundation and Mayo Clinic guidance on jet lag, grounded in circadian research, centers on strategies that are genuinely supported: shifting sleep and light exposure timing gradually before travel, seeking bright light at strategic times after landing, and simply allowing time, generally estimated at roughly a day of adjustment per time zone crossed, for the whole system to resynchronize. Supplements or "cortisol detox" products marketed specifically to fix jet lag by directly targeting cortisol are a different matter; there is no published evidence that any supplement meaningfully speeds up cortisol's resynchronization after time zone travel.
Travelers also consistently report that eastward trips, which require advancing the body clock, feel harder than westward trips, which allow it to delay, a pattern consistent with the asymmetry researchers see in how quickly circadian rhythms can shift in each direction. The practical takeaway is not that cortisol is irrelevant to jet lag, it clearly is not, but that jet lag is best understood as a broader circadian resynchronization problem rather than a single hormone to correct.
