Magnolia Bark (Relora) for Cortisol: What the Research Actually Shows

Magnolia bark has been showing up more often in "cortisol support" supplements, usually under the branded name Relora, a proprietary combination of Magnolia officinalis bark extract and Phellodendron amurense bark extract. It is often marketed with confident claims about lowering cortisol and calming stress-related skin issues. The underlying research is real and peer-reviewed, which puts it ahead of many trending adaptogens, but it is also smaller and more mixed than the marketing implies.

The most cited cortisol-specific trial is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2013. Fifty-six moderately stressed adults took 500 milligrams of Relora daily, split between breakfast and dinner, for four weeks. Researchers measured salivary cortisol exposure using enzyme immunoassay testing and found it was about 18 percent lower in the Relora group than in the placebo group by the end of the trial, alongside self-reported improvements in fatigue, vigor, and overall mood.

An earlier pilot study tells a more complicated story. Published in Nutrition Journal in 2008, this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial gave healthy premenopausal women 250 milligrams of Relora three times daily for six weeks. Participants reported meaningful improvements in anxiety and sleep quality compared with placebo, but their measured salivary cortisol and amylase levels did not change significantly. In other words, people felt calmer without a corresponding, measurable drop in their cortisol readings, a mismatch that shows up more often in stress supplement research than marketing copy tends to admit.

Taken together, what is actually established is modest: two small, peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled human trials, using a specific standardized extract at specific doses, with genuinely positive but inconsistent effects on cortisol and consistently positive effects on self-reported stress and sleep. What is not established is any skin-specific outcome. Neither trial measured skin barrier function, acne, redness, or any dermatological marker, so claims connecting Relora directly to clearer or calmer skin are extrapolating well beyond what these two studies actually tested.

This is a useful case study in the gap this site keeps returning to. A supplement having real trial data is not the same as that data supporting everything sold alongside it. Relora's two human trials are a genuinely stronger evidence base than most items in the "cortisol-balancing" aisle, most of which rely entirely on animal studies, in-vitro data, or traditional-use claims. But a 2013 trial showing an 18 percent drop in salivary cortisol over four weeks is a narrow, specific finding, not a blanket endorsement of every magnolia bark gummy, tea, or "cortisol cocktail" add-in on the market.

As with most supplements discussed on this site, standardized dose and third-party testing matter more than the ingredient name on the label. The 500-milligram-per-day dose used in the 2013 trial is a useful reference point, since many commercial products list doses well below or above that figure without citing any trial to justify the difference. Magnolia bark extracts can also interact with sedatives and central nervous system depressants, so it is worth checking with a doctor or pharmacist before adding one to a routine, particularly alongside other sleep or anxiety medications.
