Sound Baths and Cortisol: What the Singing Bowl Research Actually Shows

Sound baths, sessions where a practitioner plays gongs or metal or crystal singing bowls while participants lie down and listen, have become a fixture of wellness studios and spa menus, frequently marketed with language about "resetting your nervous system" or lowering cortisol through vibration. Stripped of the marketing language, a sound bath is essentially a guided relaxation session that uses sound instead of, say, a narrated meditation script as its focal point. The actual research on what it does physiologically is real but considerably thinner than the marketing suggests.

The most-cited study in this space is a 2017 observational study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine, which measured mood and tension in about sixty participants before and after a single Tibetan singing bowl session. It found statistically significant reductions in self-reported tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood, with anxiety dropping by roughly 40% on standardized questionnaires. That is a real, published result, but the study had no control group, meaning there is no way to know how much of the effect came specifically from the sound versus simply lying down and resting for an hour in a quiet room.

A 2023 randomized controlled trial in the European Journal of Investigation in Health, Psychology and Education addressed that gap more directly, comparing a Tibetan singing bowl session against progressive muscle relaxation and a waiting-list control group in adults with elevated anxiety. The singing bowl group showed greater increases in heart rate variability and measurable shifts in EEG brainwave activity compared with the other groups, physiological markers associated with a relaxation response. Notably, this study measured heart rate variability and brain activity rather than cortisol directly, so it supports a general relaxation effect more than it proves a specific hormonal one.

Zooming out to the full body of evidence, a 2020 systematic review in Complementary Therapies in Medicine identified only a small handful of peer-reviewed studies on singing bowls in total, spanning both clinical and non-clinical populations, including small studies in cancer patients and people with chronic spinal pain. The reviewers found consistent reports of improved mood, reduced tension, and some improvements in blood pressure and heart rate, but were explicit that the evidence base remains small and methodologically inconsistent, and called for larger, more rigorous trials before drawing firm conclusions.

None of the available studies isolate cortisol as a direct, measured outcome of a sound bath specifically, which is worth being clear-eyed about given how often that exact claim appears in marketing copy. What the research does reasonably support is that a sound bath functions as one effective form of structured relaxation, in the same general category as guided meditation or slow, ambient music listening, plausibly lowering subjective stress and shifting some nervous-system markers in the moment. The claim that the vibrations themselves are doing something biologically unique, beyond a well-designed relaxation session, is not something the current evidence actually establishes.

For someone deciding whether to try one, that distinction is mostly reassuring rather than discouraging: sound baths appear to be a low-risk, plausibly effective way to relax for an hour, similar in kind to other mindfulness-based practices. The more specific promises, that the sound is precisely retuning your hormones or cellular vibration in a way ordinary rest cannot, are marketing language running ahead of what the small existing research base has actually tested.
