Phosphatidylserine and Cortisol: Does This Supplement Actually Lower It?

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid found in every cell membrane in the body, concentrated especially in brain tissue, and it has circulated in the supplement world for years under claims about memory, mood, and, increasingly, cortisol. Unlike many trending "cortisol support" ingredients that lean mostly on animal studies or traditional use, phosphatidylserine has a genuine, if modest, body of placebo-controlled human research behind the cortisol claim specifically.
The strongest data comes from exercise research. A 2008 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition gave healthy men 600 milligrams of phosphatidylserine daily for ten days, then measured their hormonal response to a bout of moderate-intensity exercise. Compared with placebo, the supplemented group showed a meaningfully blunted cortisol response, with peak cortisol concentrations roughly 39 percent lower and overall cortisol exposure during the session about 35 percent lower. The researchers framed this as evidence that PS could help offset the physiological strain of intense training, a fairly specific, exercise-context finding rather than a general claim about everyday stress.
A separate 2014 randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Lipids in Health and Disease tested a related but distinct angle: psychological rather than physical stress. Seventy-five chronically stressed men took a soy-based phosphatidylserine and phosphatidic acid complex daily for 42 days, then completed a standardized psychosocial stress test. In participants who entered the study with high chronic stress, the 400-milligram daily dose was associated with a normalized ACTH and cortisol response to the acute stressor, essentially a less exaggerated spike. Notably, the effect did not show up in participants with low baseline chronic stress, and a higher 800-milligram dose in earlier work did not outperform lower doses, suggesting dose and baseline stress level both matter more than "more is better" marketing might imply.
What is not established is any direct effect on skin. Neither of these trials, nor the smaller body of related PS research, measured skin barrier function, acne, or any dermatological outcome. Claims linking phosphatidylserine to clearer or calmer skin are inferring a downstream effect from a cortisol change that was measured in blood or saliva, not verifying it directly on skin, which is a meaningfully different, weaker kind of evidence.
This is a case where the supplement world's enthusiasm has outpaced the specificity of the research. The exercise-cortisol finding is fairly well replicated in a narrow context: healthy, physically active adults, short-term supplementation, cortisol measured immediately around a workout. The chronic-stress finding is real but came from a single trial in men, with effects apparently limited to people who were already highly stressed to begin with. Marketing that generalizes either finding into a blanket "lowers cortisol" claim for any adult in any stress context is stretching further than the underlying studies support.
For anyone considering it, the doses used in the actual research, generally 400 to 600 milligrams daily, are a more useful reference point than whatever a product label claims works. As with most supplements covered on this site, phosphatidylserine is not risk-free for everyone; it can interact with anticoagulant medications, and anyone on blood thinners or with a bleeding disorder should check with a doctor before adding it, especially since supplement-grade PS is not standardized or verified the same way a pharmaceutical would be.
